MDGs
CITYNET focuses on the MDGs and promoting gender-friendly sensitivity to local governments, supported by UN-HABITAT. Another example is the CITYNET-UN Millennium Campaign-MuAN Joint Office on MDGs localisation for the South-Asian Sub-region located in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were established in September 2000 at the United Nations Millennium Summit, where world leaders came together to express their commitment to improving access to education, health care and clean water, as well as fighting poverty and hunger, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and HIV/AIDS. The target for achieving the MDGs was set for 2015.
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
CITYNET's Approach
CITYNET has been at the forefront of promoting MDG-oriented local governments. The 2004 Mumbai Declaration has become a beacon for confirming the commitment of local government to making a tangible difference. A joint office on MDGs now operates in Kathmandhu, Nepal, where efforts are being made to assist all cities in the region to adapt the MDGs to their local environment.
