  • APU5_ MDGS Video

    Produced by the Urban Planning Unit of Makati City, Philippines this two minute video was made especially for the Asia-Pacific Urban Forum in Bangkok, Thailand (22 - 24 June, 2011). This video highlights the 8 MDGs as well as some of the activities undertaken by CITYNET members over the years. The song from the United Nations in the Philippines is called "No One Else But Us" with lyrics by Chi Datu and music by Rico Blanco.

  • Bangladesh's Struggle for Hundred Percent Sanitation Coverage

    CITYNET associate member and development Non-governmental Organization (NGO) Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK) of Bangladesh have been working on various social and economic problems of the economically depressed and vulnerable groups since 1989 (on an informal level before this). One of DSK's main focus areas is sanitation and in particular the "Sanitation Campaign in Bangladesh" as part of the National Sanitation Task Force. In the following article submitted by DSK, they outline their experience in working with urban slum dwellers and their implementation methodology for facilitating primary health care.

  • Sanitation for All: City-to-City Cooperation

    This brochure outlines how city-to-city cooperation can work to provide decentralised sewerage treatment. It includes background information on the state of sanitation in the Asia-Pacific region. The eco-tank is explained as well as an overview of the projects that CITYNET is involved in order to provide sustainable improvement in sanitation. Through city-to-city cooperation CITYNET has been able to bring eco-tanks to Negombo (Sri Lanka), Palembang (Indonesia) and San Fernando (Philippines).

  • Asia‐Pacific City Voices Declaration

    The declaration focuses on adaptation to climate change for resilient Asia-Pacific cities - it was proposed and discussed by participating cities/local governments from APEC members, civil society,
    international organisations and academe at the Pre-APEC International Workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change for Resilient Asia‐Pacific Cities which took place on 17‐19 August 2010 in Yokohama, Japan.

  • Forum and Disaster Risk Reduction - Forum and Working Group Summary, Shanghai 28-31July

    150 participants from local governments around the world, national representatives, academia, civil society and private sector exhibitors met in the “Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction”, held in Shanghai at the Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center from 28-30 July 2010. The Forum was held within the context of the global campaign “Making Cities Resilient- My city is getting ready!” and the Shanghai EXPO 2010- “Better city - better life”. It included an exhibit of private and public innovators - “Unity in Aid” – that showcased products and technologies to help in the prevention, recovery and rehabilitation processes related to disasters in cities and an international conference targeting local authorities. The Forum was convened by DEVNET and co-organized by UNISDR, in collaboration with UN-Habitat and ICLEI, supported by the International Recovery Platform, including ILO and ADRC, and GROOTS.

    The “2009 UNISDR Terminology on Disaster Risk Reduction” has been jointly published in Chinese, Japanese and Korean by the Cabinet Office of Japan (CAO), the National Emergency Management Agency of Korea (NEMA) and UNISDR . It was officially launched on the occasion of the first trilateral meeting on disaster management by China, Japan and the Republic of Korea in Kobe, Japan on 31 October 2009.

  • Building A Local Government Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction “The Incheon Declaration”

    Summary from 11-13 August 2009 Conference in Incheon on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation agenda forward through
    an Alliance of Local Governments for Disaster Risk Reduction, with 200 participants from national to local government levels, local authorities,
    associations and networks, professional and technical organizations, academia, the private sector and civil society, and the UN present.

  • Applying Disaster Risk Reduction for Climate Change Adaptation: Country Practices and Lessons

    Many countries have recognized the threat of increased disasters posed by climate change and have begun to take first steps toward preparing themselves. This short note reports on recent experience from six countries where national and local governments, with civil society participation, have worked to reduce disaster risks as part of their adaptation efforts. Based on these examples and other countries’ experience, four key lessons can be drawn.
