CIFAL Kuala Lumpur / KLRTC: Solid Waste Management in the Asia Pacific Region

Training on “Solid Waste Management in the Asia Pacific Region” regularly takes place at the CIFAL Kuala Lumpur/ KLRTC Training Centre in Malaysia. The most recent took place in October 2011 and was attended by 30 participants from across the Asia Pacific.

The course is organised under the auspices of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Training Centre, in short KLRTC, or CIFAL (in French: Centre International de Formation des Autorités/Acteurs Locaux, or International Training Centre for Local Authorities) Kuala Lumpur. KLRTC was launched in 2003 as a joint initiative between UNITAR, CITYNET, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Veolia Environnement, and UNDP. KLRTC aims to strengthen the capacity of local governments to deal with sustainable development.

By focusing on three major aspects including: solid waste strategic plans, waste minimisation, and financing aspects, delegates learnt about all aspects of solid waste management. Best practise case studies were also examined raning from Yokohama on its success of 30% solid waste reduction, Tokyo on approaches for zero waste and Dhaka on its solid waste management master plan. In the end of the training’s session, the participants designed and presented their action plans.

Key lessons highlighted finding solutions with limited resources, the importance of community participation and the importance of waste separation/reduction and composting biodegradable waste at source.
